About
The Mohanlab Summer Internship Program (MLSI) is an unpaid, in-person summer research internship at the University of Houston's MohanLab for rising high school seniors. The program is competitive. Interns begin with one to two weeks of training in basic laboratory techniques. They then spend eight weeks doing bench research under the guidance of a scientist or graduate student. Research areas include biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering, big data analytics such as AI and image analysis, and neuroscience. The 2026 program ran from June 8 to July 31, 2026. At the end of the summer, each intern gives an oral presentation of their findings. Depending on the project, some work may contribute to research publications, and students may keep working with the lab afterward on data analysis or manuscript writing. No funding is provided, and students who live outside Houston must arrange their own housing and transportation.
Requirements
Open to rising seniors who have finished 11th grade. The program looks for applicants with strong grades and an interest in biomedical science, bioengineering, or computer science. To apply, students complete an online form with their age, GPA, and class rank, and upload a resume and a one-page personal statement. Two teacher recommendation letters are also required. Applications for 2026 opened February 1 and closed March 26, 2026.
