About
The MD Anderson UPWARDS High School Summer Research Training Program is a paid summer lab research program for local high school students from underserved backgrounds. It is run by MD Anderson Cancer Center to encourage these students to pursue careers in science and cancer research. Up to 10 high school students are accepted each year. Students work full time, 40 hours a week, on campus for 10 weeks. Each participant is matched with a faculty mentor and does hands-on research in that mentor's lab. The program also includes coursework, scientific lectures, seminars and career development events, and ends with a poster session where students can present their work. On-site participants earn a stipend of up to $7,200, which is meant to cover housing, living and travel costs. Students cannot receive school course or internship credit for taking part.
Requirements
For the 2027 program, applicants must be local high school students who will be seniors in fall 2027 and at least 18 years old by June 7, 2027. They must also be economically or educationally disadvantaged, have a disability, or be first-generation students. The application asks for a resume, transcripts, a statement about research experience and interests, and two recommendation letters, submitted through SLATE. Applications for 2027 open November 16 and close January 13, 2027 at 11:59 p.m. Central time.
