About

The Houston Methodist Summer High School Research Internship is an eight-week, full-time research program for high school juniors and seniors interested in translational medical research. Interns join a lab at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, and work alongside undergraduate research interns. Each student is paired with a faculty mentor, who chooses the summer project based on their own area of expertise and teaches the lab techniques needed to complete it. The internship ends with a research symposium where interns present posters on their work. Students also take part in a career and professional development curriculum aimed at college applications, plus seminars, lectures, a welcome reception, and sporting events. The 2027 program runs June 7 to August 6, 2027, with required daily attendance from about 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. High school interns do not receive a stipend, and they must arrange their own housing.

Requirements

Applicants must be in their junior or senior year, be 16 years old, and have at least a 3.5 GPA. US citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals who already hold a legal visa may apply. The online application includes two required essays and one optional essay, two letters of recommendation, a transcript showing fall 2026 grades, and a resume. Applications for 2027 open December 4, 2026, and close January 29, 2027.
