About

The Greehey CCRI Donald G McEwen Memorial Summer Research Program is a ten-week childhood cancer research program for high school and undergraduate students at the Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute, part of UT Health San Antonio. Participants work on hypothesis-driven research projects in pediatric cancer labs. They learn techniques used in both basic and translational science, including genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, structural biology, classical genetics, and molecular imaging. Faculty investigators review applications and match each student with a project that fits their research interests. Before starting lab work, students complete safety training. The summer ends with a research symposium where students present their data and results. The program takes place in person in San Antonio, Texas, and students from other states and countries are welcome. The 2026 program ran from June 1 to August 7, 2026. A stipend is offered to undergraduate participants, and meals, housing, and transportation are not provided. Admission is competitive and based on interest in science, resume, and academic record.

Requirements

High school applicants must be at least 16 years old by the program start date; undergraduates are also eligible. Students must commit to the full 10-week program. Applicants submit a short personal statement of 300 words, one academic letter of recommendation from a teacher or academic at their current school, a resume, and an unofficial transcript.
