About

The Genomics Research Internship Program at Stanford (GRIPS) is a summer research internship at Stanford Medicine in Stanford, California, for high school students from the Bay Area. Interns are placed in a genetics or genomics research laboratory and conduct research under the supervision of a lab mentor. They also attend required weekly sessions with the whole cohort and meet regularly with their mentor. GRIPS lasts eight weeks at 20 hours per week, usually 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. The 2026 program was hybrid, with lab activities and group workshops that required coming to campus when needed, and ran June 15 to August 6. There is a $55 application fee but no fee to take part, and need-based fee waivers and a small number of scholarships are offered.

Requirements

Applicants must live in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara or Santa Cruz County, be at least 16 by the start of the internship, have an unweighted GPA of at least 3.0, and have some prior knowledge of biology, chemistry or computer programming through classes or activities. No prior research or programming experience is required. The application includes two essays of up to 2,000 characters each, an unofficial transcript, a one-page resume and exactly one letter of recommendation from a science teacher, internship mentor, academic advisor or guidance counselor.
