About
The Pediatrics Internship Program at Stanford (PIPS) is a seven-week summer research internship run by the Stanford Medicine Department of Pediatrics in Stanford, California, for high school rising juniors and seniors who live in the Bay Area. Designed as an introduction for students with little or no research experience, it brings students from a wide range of backgrounds together with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers. Each intern completes a research project while learning about science, medicine and research careers, with a focus on maternal and child health research and pediatrics. Students commit 30 hours a week, Monday through Friday, and must attend all curriculum and near-peer mentoring sessions. The 2027 program is planned in person with the option of some remote work. There is no cost, and admitted students with financial need can receive a $3,000 stipend. Housing and transportation are not provided. About 35 to 40 students are expected for summer 2027.
Requirements
Applicants must be rising high school juniors or seniors who are at least 16 years old by the start of the program. They must live in and attend high school in San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa or Santa Cruz County, have a cumulative unweighted GPA of at least 3.0, and have a computer and internet access. Students must be available for the full seven weeks with no conflicting commitments and must live with a family member or legal guardian during the program. Applications for summer 2027 open January 7, 2027.
