About
The Student Historian Internship Program at The New York Historical is a paid, in-person history internship for high school students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 in the New York City metro area. Interns use the museum and library's collections to research a historical theme and turn their findings into digital projects, such as blog posts, that are published as public educational resources. Along the way, they meet museum, library, digital humanities, and history professionals and build research, writing, and communication skills. The current theme is Frederick Douglass and his vision of America. The internship runs twice a year, with 25 interns in each cohort. The summer cohort meets Tuesdays through Thursdays from early July to mid-August. The 2026-2027 academic year cohort meets Wednesday evenings from October 28, 2026 to June 16, 2027. Interns earn a $1,200 stipend, paid in three parts. Selection is competitive.
Requirements
Open to students entering grades 10, 11, or 12 who live in and attend school in the New York City metro area, which includes the five boroughs and nearby parts of New York State, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Applicants need parent or guardian consent and a teacher, coach, mentor, or counselor reference, and selection includes online group interviews. Accepted interns need working papers by the start of the program. Summer applications usually open in the first week of February.
