About

The Library of Congress Work Study Student Program is a paid, part-time job program for local high school juniors and seniors in the Washington, DC area. Students work at the Library of Congress during the school year, pairing on-the-job training and career development with their classroom education. Participants are exposed to many kinds of library work, including copyright, preservation, reference, access standards and information management. The 2026/2027 position pays $16.79 per hour at the GS-01 level. Students work part-time, up to 20 hours per week, on weekday afternoons from either 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Full-time work may be possible during school breaks. Work sites are in Washington, DC and Hyattsville, Maryland, and the job is not remote.

Requirements

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 16 years old (students under 18 must be eligible for a work permit), and enrolled as a junior or senior at a high school within a 45-minute commute of the work site. Homeschooled students must have completed 70% of high school. Applicants need good academic standing, and students in a Work-Based Learning Program receive preference. Apply through USAJOBS with a federal resume, a cover letter, a recent transcript and a recommendation letter emailed by a high school coordinator or counselor. Applications for the 2026/2027 announcement close April 23, 2027.
