About
The Congressman Chris Smith Internship Program offers unpaid internships in the offices of U.S. Representative Chris Smith, who represents New Jersey's 4th Congressional District, and a limited number of spots are set aside for upperclassman high school students. Interns help serve the people of the district while gaining hands-on experience with administrative and legislative support work. The internship also offers a close look at how the federal government operates. Positions are available at the district office in Toms River, New Jersey, and at the Washington, D.C. office on Capitol Hill. The internships do not pay. Students placed in the D.C. office may need to cover their own travel and living costs. Interns in either office can try to earn academic credit through their school. The number of internships is limited and depends on availability and location.
Requirements
Open to upperclassman (junior and senior) high school students; college students may also apply. There is no online application form or posted deadline. To apply for the Toms River district office, students call that office directly; to ask about a Capitol Hill internship, students contact the Washington, D.C. office by phone. Because spots are limited, interested juniors and seniors should reach out early to ask about openings.
