About

Seed Crew at The Food Project is a paid summer farm job for high school students ages 14 to 17 in Massachusetts. It is the first program young people join at The Food Project, a nonprofit focused on food and farming. Each summer, the organization hires 72 teens from a wide range of racial, economic, gender identity, and geographic backgrounds. Crew members work on urban and suburban farms in Boston, Lincoln, Lynn, and Wenham. The program lasts six weeks. Mornings are spent growing vegetables and helping distribute large amounts of fresh produce. Most afternoons are workshops on sustainable agriculture, food access, social justice, and related topics. Participants build leadership, teamwork, job, and civic skills along the way. Seed Crew members work about 28 to 32 hours a week and earn $15.50 an hour.

Requirements

Ages 14 to 17; students must be 14 by June 1 and have finished 8th grade by July 1. Crew members must be available every day of the six-week program. The application requires a letter of recommendation from an adult who is not a family member, and selected applicants are invited to interview.
