About

The Boston Mayor's Youth Council (MYC) is a citywide civic leadership program run by the City of Boston for high school students who live in Boston. Youth Councilors represent the city's young people in City government, work alongside City officials, and lead their own projects. The council has run since 1995 and, as of 2025, had involved nearly 1,000 Boston high school students. Members build leadership skills, gain hands-on public service experience, and learn how local government works. The program focuses on youth empowerment, civic engagement, community development, and leadership training with mentorship. Members take on youth-led projects in committees; for example, the 2025-26 Streets Committee produced a guide for residents on submitting street service requests for ramps and sidewalks.

Requirements

For the 2025-26 council year, applications were open to Boston residents entering grades 9 through 12, and the deadline was July 18, 2025. Students who want to join can submit the interest form on the City of Boston's Mayor's Youth Council page; the City posts application details for each council year. Questions can be sent to the council by email at myc@boston.gov.
