About
The Boston Medical Center Junior Summer Volunteer Program (JSVP) is a summer hospital volunteer program for high school students entering their junior or senior year. Participants spend the summer at Boston Medical Center learning how a hospital works and exploring careers in healthcare. The 2026 program ran from June 29 to August 21, 2026. Each volunteer works at least one recurring three-hour shift on campus every week. Volunteers also attend a weekly one-hour lecture given by a Boston Medical Center healthcare professional, and past speakers have included surgeons, physicians, nurses, social workers and administrators. Sample roles include the ambassador program, the food pantry and the pediatric outpatient clinic, and all placements are in outpatient areas. The program is in person only, with no remote option. For 2026, the program accepted 70 students. Students who complete the program receive credit for their hours and a certificate.
Requirements
Open to high school students entering their junior or senior year. Applicants must be able to commit to the full 8 weeks: at least one recurring 3-hour on-campus shift per week plus a weekly one-hour lecture. For 2026, preference was given to Boston residents. Applicants must handle all communication themselves. The 2026 application opened first to Boston Public Schools students in January and then to all students on March 6, 2026, and closed on March 9, 2026 after reaching 100 applications.
