About

The High School Health Careers Program (HSHCP) at UMass Chan Medical School is a four-week residential summer program for Massachusetts high school sophomores and juniors interested in healthcare and biomedical research. The 2027 program runs from July 11 to August 6, 2027. Students take academic classes in biology, math, English, communication skills and information technology, and the math work focuses on SAT preparation. Participants complete a small-group health equity research project, hear from guest speakers in the health professions, and get exposure to clinical and research settings, including job shadowing. Housing is provided at Worcester State University at no cost, with daily bus rides to the UMass Chan campus. Students live on campus Sunday through Friday and go home on weekends. Each participant receives a $600 stipend at the end of the program.

Requirements

Open to current high school sophomores and juniors who live in Massachusetts and attend a Massachusetts high school. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be at least 16 by July 1, 2027, and show proof of health insurance. Participants must attend the full four weeks, live in program housing, and cannot take other classes, programs or jobs during the program. Apply online with an unofficial transcript, a 1-2 page personal statement and two letters of recommendation from teachers or guidance counselors. Applications for 2027 open December 1, 2026, and the deadline is March 1, 2027, with no extensions.
