About
The Stillwater Medical Foundation High School Fellowships are paid summer healthcare fellowships for high school students in the Stillwater, Oklahoma area. The foundation awards four fellowships each summer: the Rippy, Franklin, Breedlove, and McMillan Fellowships. The fellowship lasts six weeks, or 30 days of activity, and usually starts in the first week of June. Fellows shadow doctors, nurses, and allied health staff at Stillwater Medical Center and local clinics. They watch surgeries, births, and emergency care. The program normally includes field trips to Oklahoma's two medical schools and specialized centers such as the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Typical hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with some evenings or weekends. Each fellow who completes the program earns a $2,000 stipend.
Requirements
Open to students finishing their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school who are at least 16 years old by June 1. Applicants must attend a high school in Stillwater Medical's service area (Stillwater, Blackwell, Carney, Coyle, Cushing, Glencoe, Morrison, Mulhall-Orlando, Pawnee, Perkins/Tryon, Perry, Red Rock/Marland, Ripley, or Yale); Oklahoma School of Science and Math (OSSM) students qualify if their home is in the area. The application is completed online. It usually opens March 1 and closes at midnight on the first Monday in April. A panel scores applications, and up to three finalists per fellowship are interviewed.
