About
The Stanford AIMI Summer Research Internship is a two-week virtual research program for high school students who want to learn how artificial intelligence is used in medicine and healthcare. It is run by the Stanford Center for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine and Imaging (AIMI). Interns do mentored, hands-on research, working with real-world health data and exploring both the technical and clinical sides of AI in healthcare. Along the way, students build technical skills and connect with the Stanford AIMI community. Because the program is virtual, students take part online rather than traveling to campus. AIMI is hosting a free online information session for students and parents on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, from 5 to 6 PM Pacific Time, covering program structure, the student experience, and the application process. After the summer, alumni who are still in high school may be invited to continue in AIMI's Academic Year Research Internship, a longer mentored research experience. Questions can be sent to the AIMI high school programs staff by email.
Requirements
All interns must reside in the United States for the full duration of the program. Applicants must currently attend a U.S. high school (entering 9th grade through 12th grade in Fall 2026); international students and applicants residing outside the U.S. cannot be accepted at this time. Applicants must be over the age of 14 by the start of the program. There is a strong preference for students with strong math and/or computer programming skills and/or experience with a healthcare project. Applications for the Summer 2027 program open on November 10, 2026, and the application deadline is February 1, 2027.
