About
The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) is an eight-week summer research program at Stanford where high school juniors and seniors work on medical research projects with Stanford faculty. The 2027 program is tentatively scheduled for June 7 to July 29, 2027. Students join a lab in one of eight areas: immunology, neurobiology, cancer biology, bioengineering, stem cell and regenerative medicine, cardiovascular biology, bioinformatics, or genetics and genomics. The program is in person, and participants should plan to be on campus about 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday. There is no cost to attend if accepted, and a limited number of need-based stipends are available. Housing and transportation are not provided.
Requirements
For 2027, applicants must be juniors or seniors as of fall 2026 (class of 2027 or 2028) and at least 16 years old by the start date. They must live and attend high school in the U.S. and be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Selection strongly favors students from the Bay Area. Participants must live with a parent, family member, or legal guardian during the summer. Applicants submit an online application and a recommendation letter; applying requires a $50 fee, which can be waived for families earning under $80,000. The 2027 application opens December 18, 2026, and is due in late February 2027.
