About

The NYU Urban Journalism Workshop is a free summer journalism program at New York University for high school students who live and go to school in the New York City metropolitan area. It is run by NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and is now in its 40th year. The goal is to teach core reporting skills to teens from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The 2026 workshop ran July 12 to July 18, 2026. Participants stay in an NYU residence hall in the East Village during the week. NYU faculty and visiting professional journalists teach hands-on sessions, and each student reports and produces their own multimedia stories. Student work is published on the program's news site, The Spectrum. The schedule also includes trips to New York newsrooms to meet working journalists, plus college admissions advice from NYU admissions counselors. There is no cost for admitted students.

Requirements

Open to high school students who are at least 16 years old and who both live and attend high school in the New York City metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut tri-state region). Apply through the online application.
