About

The NYU High School Law Institute (HSLI) is a free, school-year law program for high school students across New York City, run by students at NYU School of Law. Participants study constitutional law and criminal law and practice speech and debate. Classes meet on Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM. Teams of current NYU Law students teach each course, using a curriculum built by experienced HSLI instructors and board members. Lessons center on discussion and include background reading, class activities, and homework. The 2026-27 program opened with a virtual orientation on September 13, 2026. Fall classes run on four Saturdays in September and October, followed by a College Day in November. Spring classes meet on four Saturdays from late January through February, and graduation is in March.

Requirements

Eligible applicants will be students entering, or currently enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who live within commutable distance to NYU's Washington Square Park campus in NYC's West Village. The program looks for students who want to understand how the legal system affects society and who hope to advocate for others. Students do not need to plan on attending law school, but they are expected to work hard in their studies. Questions can be sent to the program by email.
