About

The AMRI High School Summer Research Program is an 8-week, full-time summer research experience at LSU New Orleans for high school students who live and attend school near the campus. It is run by the Advanced Materials Research Institute (AMRI), which has offered a summer research program for high school students since 2002. More than 140 students from across the Greater New Orleans area have taken part. Participants work in research labs alongside university scientists, either on their own project or as part of a larger team. Research areas often draw on chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, psychology, and mathematics. Recent projects have covered topics such as nanomaterials, battery materials, 3-D printing, neuroscience, and computer modeling. Students also attend weekly seminars and tutorials on subjects including lab safety, ethics, electron microscopy, and science careers. Each student receives a $2,000 stipend for the summer, and other program costs are covered by AMRI and the host researchers.

Requirements

Applicants must live and go to high school within 40 miles of LSU New Orleans. Prior research experience is not required. The online application asks for a GPA, class standing, a list of science and math courses, any work or research experience, and a personal statement of up to 750 words, plus three letters of recommendation and an official transcript.
