About
The Appalachian STEM Academy at Oak Ridge (ASA) is a residential summer STEM program in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for students and teachers who live in the Appalachian region. The program is all expenses paid, so families do not pay to attend. The high school track lasts two weeks, and students work on hands-on research projects mentored by scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Bridge Program is a two-week track for younger high school students. A one-week middle school program is offered for current 6th to 8th graders, and a separate two-week track serves high school STEM teachers. Alongside research, the academy builds teamwork, introduces college opportunities and celebrates the culture and history of Appalachia. The 2027 program runs July 10 to July 23, 2027.
Requirements
Open to students who live in the Appalachian region. To qualify for the high school track, a student must currently be in 9th, 10th or 11th grade and be at least 16 years old by the time the program starts. The Bridge Program is for high school students under 16 who already finished the ASA middle school program. Students apply online once registration opens. Registration for 2027 is expected to open in fall 2026.
