About
The Michigan State University High School Honors Science, Mathematics and Engineering Program (HSHSP) is a seven-week summer research program for motivated high school students entering 12th grade. Michigan State University's College of Education hosts the program, which first began in 1958 and describes itself as the oldest continuously running program of its kind in the U.S. Participants spend the summer doing intensive research work and live on Michigan State's campus in East Lansing, Michigan, alongside peers from across the U.S. and its territories who come from diverse backgrounds but share an interest in science or math. The program grew from a science enrichment program into a national, highly selective residential program, and since 1989 it has offered research opportunities in all areas of science, engineering and mathematics. Its stated aim is to teach students how research works while giving them a social setting where that learning can grow. Michigan State has announced that HSHSP will not run in summer 2026. Students interested in a future session should check the program's official page for updates on when it will be offered again.
Requirements
Open to students from across the U.S. and its territories who are entering 12th grade (rising seniors). Selective, residential seven-week program on the Michigan State campus. No HSHSP session was held in summer 2026; application instructions for a future session have not been posted.
