About
SHTEM Summer Internships for High Schoolers is a summer research internship run by the Stanford Compression Forum at Stanford University in Stanford, California, for high school juniors and seniors. Interns work on research projects in mentored groups of two to five. They also attend a weekly faculty lecture series and social lunches, a hands-on workshop in the Lab64 maker space, an introductory programming workshop and facility tours. The 2027 program is expected to run in person at Stanford from June 21 to August 6, 2027, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, with 20 to 30 hours of research a week. Tuition is $2,500, plus a nonrefundable $95 application fee, and financial aid is offered. Housing is not provided, and meals are provided only on some days.
Requirements
Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors in the 2026-2027 school year, at least 14 years old by June 20, 2027, and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Sophomores and international students are not eligible. No prior research experience is needed. The application requires one letter of recommendation, and there is no interview. Former SHTEM interns may apply again, but applicants new to the program receive preference. Decisions are expected in late March or early April 2027.
