About
The Science, Technology, and Engineering Program (STEP) is a hands-on engineering internship run by Georgia Tech's Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering for high school students living in Georgia. It is supported by industry partners and the Georgia Space Grant Consortium. Participants work in small teams on an engineering challenge drawn from an active Georgia Tech research project, guided by a Georgia Tech faculty mentor. Along the way they learn the engineering design process, and at the end of the program each team presents its results to parents, teachers, faculty and industry representatives. In 2026, STEP ran as a two-week day program in several Georgia locations: STEP Atlanta on the Georgia Tech main campus from July 6 to 17, STEP Augusta from June 8 to 17, and a session in Albany hosted with the Georgia Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy. It is not residential, so students arrange their own daily transportation. Because the program is fully funded by industry donations, there is no charge to participate.
Requirements
Applicants must be Georgia residents who are at least 16 years old by the start of the program and in high school. Space is limited. Students apply through an online application form on the program page; Albany applicants apply through 4C Academy. For the 2026 cycle, Atlanta applications were due March 1, 2026, with acceptance emails sent starting April 1, 2026.
