About

The Biorocket Research Internship is a six-month biology research internship run by Genspace in Brooklyn for New York City public and charter high school students who are at least 16. Interns learn genetic engineering techniques and lab skills, then work with teen peers and scientist mentors to design a summer research project. The program also covers science communication, including improv training, plus lab tours, field trips, and career guidance at research labs and biotech companies. Participants earn a $2,000 stipend. The 2026 spring session ran February 25 to May 21 on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, and the 2026 summer session ran July 6 to August 14, in person Monday through Thursday with virtual Fridays. Genspace especially encourages students from groups historically excluded from science to apply.

Requirements

Students must be 16 by orientation day, live in or attend a NYC public or charter school within about 45 minutes of Genspace (some exceptions to the distance rule are possible), and commit to the program from February through August. Applicants submit contact and academic information, short essays or a video response, and one teacher or mentor reference, who completes a separate form. No transcript or minimum GPA is required.
