About
The Brooklyn College Now STEM Research Academy is a free science research program at Brooklyn College for New York City high school students. It is run by College Now, the dual enrollment partnership between the City University of New York (CUNY) and the NYC Department of Education. The academy has two parts. In the spring, students take a 3-credit college oceanography course called Society and the Ocean, which covers research methods, lab and field work, data analysis, and presenting results. The second part is a 6-week summer research internship in a Brooklyn College science lab. Past and possible research areas include evolutionary biology, soil science, cognitive and behavioral psychology, and electrochemical engineering. Summer interns present their work at a citywide STEM colloquium at the American Museum of Natural History and receive a $1,500 stipend after completing the internship. Participants also get peer mentoring and access to an alumni network through the museum's Science Research Mentoring Consortium.
Requirements
Open to New York City high school students, mainly 11th graders; motivated 10th graders are also considered. Students from high schools with few STEM opportunities are especially encouraged to apply. Students must finish the spring course to apply for the summer internship. Applications open in early November for the following spring and require an application form, high school transcript, essays, and an interview. Students request an application from the program by email.
