About

The BioBus Junior Scientist Internship is a paid, part research and part science communication internship for New York City high school students in grades 9 through 11. Run by BioBus, a science education nonprofit, it pairs students with research scientists who mentor them as they build their own independent projects using research-grade microscopes. Interns also help teach BioBus science programs for younger kids and take part in outreach events. There are three tracks: the Harlem Science Internship, open citywide with preference for Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood students; the Lower East Side program; and a Women in STEM track in Harlem. The Harlem and Lower East Side tracks meet 30 hours a week for six weeks in summer, then part-time during the school year. The 2026-27 cohort runs from July 6, 2026 to about June 15, 2027. Interns earned $17 an hour in 2026.

Requirements

Students must currently be in grades 9-11 and must live and go to school in New York City. Lower East Side track: live or attend school on the Lower East Side or in Chinatown. Women in STEM track: female-identifying, gender non-conforming, or non-binary students who live or attend school in Harlem, Washington Heights, or Inwood. Working papers are required; grades, transcripts, resumes and recommendation letters are not. Submit the online BioBus Internship application (one application covers all tracks). BioBus says the 2027-28 application will open in January 2027.
