About
Physics in and Through Cosmology is a one-week summer workshop run by the Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) for motivated high school students and high school physics teachers interested in STEM. Its website calls it the QuarkNet Workshop. The 2026 workshop, the twentieth, ran June 22 to 26, 2026. It was held in person at Berkeley Lab, which sits above UC Berkeley. Participants hear talks from Berkeley Lab scientists and postdocs on particle physics and cosmology. Recent topics have included the Higgs boson and the ATLAS experiment at CERN, neutrino physics, dark matter, dark energy, mapping the universe, and machine learning. The week also includes tours of lab facilities and time to discuss research directly with scientists. Students meet peers from high schools around the San Francisco Bay Area. There is no cost for students or teachers. The program is partly supported by QuarkNet.
Requirements
Open to highly motivated high school students with an interest in STEM. Participants must get to Berkeley Lab daily for the in-person week. Apply through the workshop website. Questions go to the program coordinator, Laurie Kerrigan.
