About
The Woodland Ecology Research Mentorship (WERM) at Wave Hill is a paid, 14-month ecology research internship for New York City high school students. It takes place at Wave Hill, a public garden in the Bronx. Interns join local scientists and restoration practitioners in field research across the city's natural areas. The program runs in three phases: a first summer from July to August, an academic year from September to June, and a second summer from July to August. Along the way, interns take three college courses taught at Wave Hill and the University of Mount Saint Vincent, covering natural area restoration, GIS mapping, and research methods. During the final summer, each intern works on an independent research project with a mentor. Interns earn about $3,500 over the length of the program, plus credit for three college courses and career and college advice.
Requirements
Must be enrolled in high school, at least 15 years old by July 1 of the starting year (July 1, 2026 for the 2026 cohort), a New York City resident, and eligible to work in the United States. Must have a strong interest in science research and the urban environment, be able to work independently and outdoors in unpaved natural areas, travel off-site for field trips, and commit to all three phases of the 14-month program. Wave Hill welcomes all NYC youth interested in urban ecology and especially encourages Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students and those from under-resourced communities. Wave Hill says 2027 internship details will be posted in the winter; contact youthprograms@wavehill.org for application information.
