About

Girls Who Code at UIC Club is a free, year-round computer science program run by the Women in Engineering Programs at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) in Chicago, Illinois, for high school students in 9th through 12th grade from the Chicago area. Students of any gender may join, and no coding experience is needed. Members are placed in one of four levels: an introduction to Python, web app development with HTML and CSS, hardware and circuit building, or embedded systems and smart sensors. The club meets on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Most sessions are held on Zoom, with some in-person events at UIC, including an end-of-program celebration and graduation. The 2026-27 program runs September 26, 2026, to April 10, 2027. The club's team is made up of UIC engineering students, and there is no cost to take part.

Requirements

Open to students who are in high school during the program year, with some exceptions possible, and to students of every gender. Members need WiFi, a computer with a camera and microphone, and access to Zoom; the club does not lend computers, and Chromebooks may not work with every program used. Members must commit to the full program and attend Saturday sessions regularly, with up to two absences allowed each semester. Students apply through an online membership application. For 2026-27, applications were due September 19, 2026.
