About
Newcomb Summer Session is a selective pre-college program at Tulane University for high school students who want to study gender and social change. It is offered by Tulane's Newcomb Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana, and students of all gender identities are welcome. Students take part in discussion-based seminars, workshops and collaborative projects that examine feminist ideas and contemporary social dynamics, with an emphasis on critical thinking and on preparing to take on leadership roles. Recent course offerings have included Communications for Feminist Civic Engagement, which teaches the persuasive communication needed to advocate for causes; Learning from Women of the Civil Rights Movement Past and Present; Media and Reproductive Health; Women and Activism in Louisiana History; and Women's Life Writing: From Autobiography to Instagram, which looks at how women have represented themselves across centuries. The program is organized as two-week residential sessions made up of complementary courses meant to be taken together. Tuition is charged, and Tulane awards need-based financial aid toward it, with priority given to Louisiana residents.
Requirements
Open to rising 9th through 12th graders of all gender identities. Residential students must be at least 14 by the first day of their session. Apply online with a current report card and an essay on your interest in your selected courses. No application fee; need-based financial aid is available, with priority for Louisiana residents.
