About
The Stanford Program for Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Physics (SPINWIP) is a free three-week virtual summer physics program run by the Stanford Physics Department and the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology in Stanford, California, for high school students. Designed to get high school girls excited about physics, it covers research in quantum physics, quantum computing, astrophysics and cosmology. Students learn Python and apply it to physics projects, attend lectures by Stanford professors and researchers, and work in small groups led by Stanford undergraduates. College planning and career development workshops and mentoring by Stanford students and faculty are also part of the program. The 2026 program ran online July 6 to July 24, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pacific time.
Requirements
Students in 9th through 11th grade at the time of application can apply, including students outside the United States, and students of any gender are welcome. No prior physics or coding knowledge is needed. Rising juniors and seniors, first-generation students and students from under-resourced or underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
