About

The Ochsner STAR Summer Scholars Program is a free summer healthcare program run by Ochsner Health for high school juniors in Louisiana. STAR is designed especially for students with limited means and access who want to explore careers in science and medicine. The program lasts four weeks and meets Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It takes place in person at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. The 2026 session ran June 1 to June 26, 2026. Students carry out lab experiments with guidance from Ochsner scientists, practice with medical technology, and hear from physicians, nurses and administrators. The schedule also covers leadership and professional skills, such as resume writing and presentations, along with CPR certification and stress management. There is no cost to attend.

Requirements

Must be at least 16 by the first day of the program and currently in 11th grade; graduating seniors are not eligible. There is no minimum GPA or test score. Louisiana residents attending Louisiana high schools are prioritized, and students need reliable transportation. The application includes an online student form with a 300-350 word essay, a resume and short answers, plus school transcripts and two recommendation letters from non-relatives. Accepted students submit an immunization record and TB questionnaire.
