About
The Ocean County Historical Society High School Community Service Program is a volunteer opportunity for high school students in grades 9 through 12 in Toms River, New Jersey. Students help the society's volunteers with the daily work of its Museum and Research Center. Participants learn how a history museum operates, including the history and preservation of the Elizabeth Sculthorpe Force House, the research center, nearby buildings, and the grounds. Possible projects include library and museum inventory and record keeping, oral history interviews and transcripts, exhibit research and display, help with programs, preservation techniques, and garden upkeep. The program is unpaid, and participation is voluntary. Work takes place in person at the museum at 26 Hadley Avenue in Toms River. Volunteer days and times are worked out with each student.
Requirements
Open to high school students in grades 9-12 with an interest in history or a related field. Students must commit to volunteer hours for one school semester. Submit an application form, a release form signed by a parent or guardian, and a letter explaining why you want to take part. After reviewing the packet, the Internship Director contacts applicants to set up an interview. The society does not post a specific application deadline.
