About

The Explorers Teen Program at the Newark Museum of Art is a paid college, career, and life readiness program for high school students in the Newark area. Participants build skills and confidence through activities that draw on the Museum's collections, resources, and staff. Explorers complete internships in different Museum departments, where they design and lead their own projects to try out a range of jobs and fields. They also attend workshops on leadership, public speaking, and team-building, take part in art and science projects with a STEM focus, and join group trips to other cultural and learning institutions. Students are paid for their participation. The program is a multi-year commitment lasting three to four years. During the school year, Explorers spend six after-school hours per week in the program and complete 60 hours of community service each year. In the summer, the commitment rises to 25 hours per week. The program takes place in person at the Museum in Newark, New Jersey.
