About

The North Carolina Senate Page Program allows high school students in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade to get a hands-on experience in the legislative process of the state. Hired pages observe how laws are made and assist senators and staff members during the legislative session while working on the Senate Chamber floor. They participate in daily sessions, committee meetings, and perform duties that include delivering messages and materials within the legislative complex, answering phones in senators’ offices, passing out documents and running errands. The selection process is competitive, and senators are allotted a number of students they can sponsor each session. Senate pages must be sponsored by a member of the North Carolina Senate, in good academic standing, and submit their application to their senator. The program runs for several weeks throughout the year, and each page receives a stipend of $150 per week to cover expenses.

Requirements

To be considered for the North Carolina Senate Page Program, applicants must be in grades ten, eleven, or twelve and sponsored by a member of the North Carolina Senate. Applicants must also be in good academic standing at their school and have prior approval from their principal if serving as a page during the school year. The selection process is highly competitive, with senators recommending individuals to be appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate on a first-come, first-served basis. Pages must be able to attend sessions from Monday afternoon to Thursday afternoon of their assigned week, work in appropriate business attire, and receive a stipend of $150 or thirty hours of community service. Pages are expected to participate in daily senate sessions, committee meetings, and provide office assistance. Lodging is not provided, and pages must cover their lunch and personal expenses. Only a limited number of parking spaces are available for self-commuting pages. Finally, Senate Pages are encouraged to be helpful, cordial, and polite, and to avoid wearing jeans, tennis shoes, or thong sandals (flip flops) while on duty.
