About
The LEAH Knox Data Science and Biomedical Research Internship is a paid, two-year research program for Massachusetts high school students interested in science careers. It is a track within the LEAH Project, a Boston-area STEM, college access and career readiness program, and is funded by a National Institutes of Health science education grant. Students join during the summer after 10th or 11th grade. The first summer is an intensive lab experience at MIT, held five days a week from July into August in the Kendall Square area of Cambridge. During the following school year, scholars attend at least five STEM events, are paired with a mentor who works in a STEM field, and get college readiness support, including college visits. The second summer brings help applying for, and a possible placement in, a university, organizational or corporate lab. All program activities pay a stipend, and summer interns can earn up to $2,250.
Requirements
Open to current high school students who will be 16 by the start of the program; graduating seniors are not eligible. Applicants must live in and/or attend school in Massachusetts, be able to commute by public transportation to the Kendall Square area of Cambridge, and have finished a high school biology class. Must be a US citizen, permanent resident, or non-citizen with employment authorization. No prior lab or research experience is required; students with limited STEM exposure are especially encouraged to apply. Applications usually open January through March each year.
