About
The Biotechnology for Science & Health Academy at Georgetown University is a two-week, non-credit summer academy in Washington, D.C. for high school students who already have some science background and want hands-on biotechnology lab experience. Students learn concepts through lectures and then test them in laboratory exercises. Topics include gene cloning, DNA and protein purification, bioinformatics, enzyme function, forensics, and biotechnology in food safety. The program also covers how biotechnology is used in medicine, agriculture, and basic research. Days mix classroom lectures, guest speakers, field trips, group discussions, and a capstone project, and students may visit a research lab, company, or institute in the D.C. area. The 2026 session ran June 28 to July 10, 2026. Tuition in 2026 was $6,800 for residential students, including meals, and $5,530 for commuters. Participants who complete the academy receive a Certificate of Participation.
Requirements
Applicants must be in 8th through 12th grade during the school year before the program, hold at least a 2.0 GPA, and be at least 15 years old by check-in. Admitted students then register and pay tuition for a seat on a first-come, first-served basis. Georgetown says it is planning Summer 2027 programs and will post offerings on November 16.
