About

The Fermilab VALOR JROTC Program is a paid summer internship at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory for Illinois high school students enrolled in JROTC. Interns spend six weeks giving technical support to an assigned team, usually an experiment or a support group. They work under the direct supervision of a Fermilab employee alongside scientists, engineers, and other lab staff. The internship is in person at the Fermilab site in Batavia, Illinois. The 2027 program runs from June 28 to August 6, 2027. Interns are paid $18 per hour. Fermilab does not provide housing or reimburse transportation, so interns need their own way to get to the lab. Interns finish the program with an oral presentation.

Requirements

Open to Illinois high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates enrolled in an Illinois high school JROTC program who are eligible to work in the United States. Apply online with an unofficial transcript, a resume, one letter of recommendation, and three short essay answers of under 200 words each. The essays ask about internship goals, how JROTC has prepared the applicant, and the skills they bring to a team. Applications for the 2027 program are open from October 5, 2026 to February 5, 2027, and offers go out on March 15, 2027.
