About

The Legacy Youth Leadership Program (LYLP) is a civil rights history and leadership program run by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) for high school students in the Jefferson County, Alabama area. The program has been running since 2007. Students who are accepted attend twelve weekly workshops on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm, starting in early March and ending in late May. The workshops cover BCRI's exhibitions, African American history and culture, and leadership development. After finishing the training, students serve as youth docents who lead tours of the BCRI galleries and Kelly Ingram Park, and students who complete the program are eligible for a $1,000 stipend. The program takes place in person in Birmingham.
