About
The Baruch College Now STEM Research Academy is a two-semester science research program at Baruch College (CUNY) for New York City public high school sophomores and juniors. Each year about 25 students are chosen. The program begins with a spring research methods course that runs from late January to mid-May. The course is hybrid, with in-person sessions on Wednesday afternoons, and students who pass with a C or better earn one college credit. Students who complete the spring course can then join a six-week summer research experience with a CUNY faculty mentor, running from mid-July to mid-August, Monday through Thursday. Past research areas include biology, environmental science, psychology, sociology and communication. Summer participants earn a $1,575 stipend, paid the following fall, and present their findings at the end of the summer.
Requirements
Applicants must be current 10th or 11th graders in an NYC public high school with an overall average of 80 or higher; 10th graders also need 80+ averages in English, math and science. Priority goes to students from partner high schools and from groups historically underrepresented in science. Apply with an online application, a copy of your high school transcript, and a one-page essay on yourself, your science interests, and what you hope to gain. Selection considers Regents scores in English and math, GPA, transcript and the writing sample. Applications usually open in mid-October and close in December, with decisions in mid-December.
