About

The Field Biology Internship (FBI) at Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) is a hands-on outdoor science program for high school students in New York City. Interns explore ecosystems in Alley Pond Park and other parts of Queens while learning the basics of research and experiment design. The program is aimed at students who want to build STEM skills in the field and learn about local wildlife and habitats. The internship runs in fall, spring and summer sessions. Fall and spring sessions meet on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Summer sessions meet on either Tuesday or Wednesday mornings in July and August, and each intern joins one cohort day. Accepted interns pay a $200 participation fee, and financial aid is available on request with no paperwork required. APEC is located at 229-10 Northern Blvd. in Douglaston, Queens.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 14 years old and currently enrolled in high school. Interns must be able to do at least 2 hours of outdoor activity, attend 5 of 6 classes (orientation not counted), arrange their own transportation to the site, and give a final presentation to complete the internship. To apply, students fill out an online application and then complete a virtual interview. APEC posts seasonal deadlines of August 1 for fall, January 2 for spring and May 1 for summer.
