About

The Field Biology Internship (FBI) at Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) is a hands-on outdoor science internship for high school students in Queens, New York City. Interns study plants, animals and habitats in their natural settings while exploring ecosystems in Alley Pond Park and other parts of Queens. The program introduces the basics of field research and experiment design, skills that help with later programs and college. The fall session meets on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. APEC also runs spring and summer sessions. Accepted interns pay a $200 participation fee, and financial aid is available on request with no documentation required.

Requirements

Applicants must be at least 14 years old and currently enrolled in high school. They must be able to take part in outdoor activities for at least 2 hours, commit to 6 of the 7 fall session dates, arrange their own transportation to the site, and finish the internship with a final presentation. To apply, students submit an online application, and APEC then schedules a virtual interview. APEC lists the fall application deadline as August 1, so check the official page for the next fall cycle.
