About

The West Virginia Baptist Camp at Cowen Summer Camp Counselor role is a volunteer position for Christian teens and adults, age 16 and up, who want to lead campers during a week of summer camp in Cowen, West Virginia. The camp is a ministry of the West Virginia Baptist Convention. Counselors are unpaid volunteers, which sets them apart from the camp's paid summer staff. Each counselor serves only for the length of the camp session they sign up for and works under that session's camp director on programming. In 2026, sessions ran from early June into the summer.

Requirements

Counselors must be at least 16 years old and at least four years older than the campers in their session. Applicants must be committed to Jesus Christ and actively worship within the West Virginia Baptist Convention. To apply, first contact the director of the camp session you want to serve, since openings depend on each camp's needs. Every counselor needs approval from both the session director and the Director of Camping and Youth, plus a background check. New counselors submit a counselor application, a reference from their pastor, and two general references from people who have known them for at least five years. All paperwork is due two weeks before camp starts.
