About

The University of Chicago Youth Internship Program (YIP) is a paid summer job program for Chicago public high school students who want to explore careers in STEM. It was launched in 2021 and spans two summers. In the first summer, students earn while they learn through workshops, a speaker series with STEM professionals, workplace visits, college tours, and planning for life after high school. Students who finish Year 1 can reapply for a Year 2 internship, a six-week job in health sciences, computer sciences, or IT services within a University department. Year 2 interns support department projects and give a formal presentation about their work. Interns are paid Chicago minimum wage for up to 20 hours a week over six weeks. The 2026 program ran June 22 to July 30, Monday through Thursday.

Requirements

Applicants must live in the city of Chicago, attend a Chicago public high school (charter schools included), be at least 16 by the first day, and be authorized to work in the United States. Interest in health sciences, computer sciences, or IT services is expected. For the 2026 cycle, Year 1 was open to the classes of 2027, 2028, and 2029, and Year 2 is open only to students who completed Year 1. Priority goes to students who live in or attend school in nine South Side neighborhoods near campus, including Hyde Park, Woodlawn, and South Shore. Applying to Year 1 requires a Chicago Youth Works application, a YIP application, and a group interview. The 2026 Year 1 deadline was April 23, 2026.
