About
The Missouri Innovation Campus internships are paid, multi-year placements with Kansas City-area companies for high school students in the Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) program. The MIC program is a partnership between the University of Central Missouri, the Lee's Summit R-7 School District, Metropolitan Community College and more than 70 local businesses, housed in a facility in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The internship is a core part of the program. Students start the summer after their junior year of high school and complete a three-year internship with one of the MIC's corporate partners, staying with the same company each year. They work full time every summer and two days a week during the fall and spring until they graduate from UCM, building job-ready skills on site. The internship is paid each summer, fall and spring, and students arrange their own transportation to the work site. Alongside the internship, students take college-level courses starting in their junior year so they can earn an associate degree by the end of high school, then finish a bachelor's degree with two more years at UCM. The university says this pathway shortens the time and cost of a degree, letting students graduate with little to no debt.
Requirements
Open to students in the MIC Program, which students join for their junior year of high school. Prepare with 95% attendance, a 3.0 unweighted GPA and required prerequisite courses, and score into college-level courses on the ACT or ACCUPLACER. Apply online to Summit Technology Academy and mark interest in the MIC Program; eligibility and MOU forms are completed at the MIC enrollment meeting in March. Students interview with MIC business partners and must secure an internship before senior year to stay in the program, and must provide their own transportation.
