About

The Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Leader-in-Training (LIT) Program is a summer volunteer role for high school students who like working with young children and spending time outdoors. LITs help camp staff run nature day camps for kids from preschool through about 4th grade at Lakeside Lab in Milford, Iowa. Duties include leading crafts and activities, being a role model for campers, and helping keep classrooms, equipment and outdoor spaces in good shape. The program aims to build leadership skills and introduce students to careers in education, biology, ecology and natural resources. The position is unpaid, and snacks and lunch are provided on camp days. In 2026 the camp season ran from June through August. LITs pick the camps they want, and the Education Coordinator makes the final assignments. Camp days start at 8:30am and end at 12:30pm or 3:30pm.

Requirements

Open to students entering 9th through 12th grade. In 2026, LITs committed to at least two camps, and a required training took place on May 29, 2026. To apply, students fill out an online form that includes a personal statement of up to 300 words on why they want to be an LIT, their experience, and their goals. The 2026 application deadline was May 1, 2026.
