About

UB Experiential Learning in Emerging STEM Technologies (ExLENT) is a summer program at the University at Buffalo for high school students in Buffalo and Western New York who want to build skills in AI, cybersecurity, drones and the Internet of Things. It is run by UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as part of the National Science Foundation's ExLENT effort. The program selects a cohort of students who show promise in STEM. The 2026 session ran from June 29 to July 31, 2026. Students work hands-on in UB research facilities. Everyone takes core courses in programming and databases and in cybersecurity operations. The programming course starts with Python and then moves to HTML, CSS, web pages and simple databases, and it has no prerequisites. Electives cover artificial intelligence with a focus on privacy and trust, the Internet of Things, and robotics. Participants may get the chance to present their work at regional and national science fairs and conferences. Eligible students may receive stipends and help with expenses.
