About
The Science Squad internship program at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is designed to provide teens with an opportunity to develop soft skills such as communication, leadership, and job readiness, which are valuable for any future job. As part of the program, volunteers will engage visitors in interactive science activities at the museum, and receive training on different topics each week. The internship has three sessions: Spring, Summer, and Fall, and continuing volunteers have the opportunity to mentor new volunteers and work on expanding their science communication skills by creating their own demonstrations or short videos. The program aims to inspire curiosity in science while providing an enriching experience for teenage volunteers.
Requirements
To be considered for the Science Squad guided volunteering program for teens at OMSI, applicants must apply before the deadline for the session that they are interested in volunteering for. Applicants should have a genuine interest in science and its many applications, as well as a desire to work with visitors of the museum. As part of the program, each applicant must attend trainings on communication, leadership, and job readiness skills. After the training, trainees are expected to lead interactive science demonstrations with museum visitors during their shifts. Applicants who continue with the program beyond the first session can mentor new volunteers, and participate in small group projects that enhance their science communication skills. The Spring, Summer and Fall sessions run once or twice a week on either Saturday or Sunday.
