About
The MIT Women's Technology Program (WTP) is a four-week residential summer program at MIT that introduces high school juniors to mechanical engineering. It is a women-focused program aimed at young women and other students who are underserved in engineering. The 2027 program runs June 26 to July 24, 2027, and students live in MIT dorms with housing, meals, and materials provided. Classes are taught by MIT graduate students and combine hands-on labs, team problem solving, a poster project, and a final Rube Goldberg machine challenge. Attending is free for families earning under $120,000 a year, with sliding fees above that level and extra aid available for hardship. About 20 students are admitted each year.
Requirements
Applicants must be in 11th grade when they apply and must have a permanent family home address in the United States. The program is meant for students who do well in math and science but have little or no engineering experience, and participants must attend all four weeks. It is free to apply. The online application includes three personal essays (275+ words each), a grade 9-10 transcript, grade 11 fall grades, and online reference forms from one math teacher and one science teacher. Test scores are optional. Applications for summer 2027 open October 16, 2026, and are due December 21, 2026, and decisions are emailed in March.
