About
The King Conservation Science Scholars program, part of Brookfield Zoo Chicago's King Conservation Leadership Academy, is a year-round zoo program for high school students in grades 9-12 who are interested in conservation and want to create positive change. Scholars build public speaking skills by teaching Zoo guests about animals and leading interactive activities. They also take STEAM-based courses and workshops on topics such as natural science, sociology and psychology, and community engagement. The program runs year-round, with new cohorts onboarding each May and November, and participants commit to at least 80 engagement hours each year they are enrolled. Most activities take place in person at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, with some opportunities in the community or online. Participants receive Zoo access comparable to an individual membership, ten free general admission passes to share with family and friends, free entry to select attractions, and discounts at Zoo restaurants. Scholars can also apply for scholarships and seasonal jobs offered through the Zoo, and past participants can stay connected through the King Academy Alumni Network.
